Mt. Vernon and Charles
Mt. Vernon and Charles
I started my oil painting with a tonal underpainting using transparent red oxide. After blocking in the basic shapes and values, local color was added to the large shapes. I minimized details, especially in the cars, to lead viewers into the painting. My son and his family lived on Beacon Hill and the bakery at the bottom of the hill is one we frequented for breakfast. I was drawn to the 3 steeple shapes lining up in this view as we would walk down MT. Vernon street and had painted them previously. This time I wanted to challenge myself by going bigger.
